History

The Deinhard winery was founded by Friedrich Deinhard (1812 – 1871) and his wife Auguste Jordan, after she inherited a portion of her father Andreas Jordan’s estate upon his death in 1848. Still known today in Deidesheim as the “Jordan’sche Teilung”, Jordan’s vineyards were split amongst his three children and still exist today.

Dr. Andreas Deinhard succeeded them and was followed by his daughter Emma and her husband Captain Leopold von Winning who took over in 1907. Under Leopold von Winning’s leadership the estate experienced a heyday and became a founding member of the “Deutscher Weinbauverband” as well as the “Verband der Naturwein-Versteigerer” which is known today as the prestigious VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates).

During this period the winery was called “Hauptmann von Winning’sches Edelweingut” and the family von Winning, which was ennobled 900 years ago by the Emperor, remains in close contact with our estate.

In 1918 the winery became the property of Karl Josef Hoch Wine Cellars from Neustadt an der Weinstraße. Lacking the right to use the name “von Winning” the estate was again called Dr. Deinhard.

In November 2007 entrepreneur Achim Niederberger became the winery’s new owner and Stephan Attmann its director. Within just five years, Achim Niederberger from Neustadt was able to bring the three wineries originally owned by Andreas Jordan – Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan, Reichsrat von Buhl und Dr. Deinhard in Deidesheim – back under one roof after one and a half centuries of Jordan’sche Teilung.

Achim Niederberger now holds the largest acreage of privately-owned vineyards in Germany with 150 ha (360 acres). His three wineries are, of course, managed independently and free to develop autonomously.

To pay tribute to the great potential and demand for quality, the von Winning estate was re-established to provide a perfect setting for promoting our premium-wines under the von Winning and Dr. Deinhard labels.

We cherish our winery’s dynamic heritage and, at the same time, look towards the future with both self-confidence and a great deal of respect for tradition. A unique mixture of traditional methods and modern facilities forms the basis for wines that will, themselves, make history.
